Happy Singing
"<" back one image Happy Singing
Singing carols at Christmas was originally a pagan tradition, the word ‘carol’ meaning a dance, or song of joy and praise. Later St Francis of Assisi introduced ‘canticles’ into Nativity plays in Italy. These evolved into carols sung by travelling minstrels, changing depending on their audience. The tradition of wassailing is a variant of caroling with singers going door-to-door, singing and offering a drink from the Wassail bowl in exchange for gifts such as ‘figgy pudding’. Wassailing is celebrated on Twelfth Night and is remembered in the songs ‘Here We Come A-Wassailing’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. Father Christmas has a great singing voice and loves to sing carols, particularly when he’s in the shower.
