Big Ben, the Elizabeth Tower and Clock
"<" back one image Big Ben, the Elizabeth Tower and Clock
Mistakenly called Big Ben by many people, this building is the Elizabeth Tower at the end of the Palace of Westminster - the Houses of Parliament. It houses the famous ‘Big Ben’ bell, cast in 1856 by John Warner of Stockton-on-Tees. It cracked beyond repair whilst being tested. The bell was recast in 1858 at the Whitechapel Foundry as a 13.5 ton bell, 7’6” tall and 9’ in diameter. This bell also cracked and has chimed with a slightly different tone ever since. The clock has become a symbol of the United Kingdom and its chimes are recognised throughout the world.
