"<" back one image St Paulís Cathedral
There has been a church on the site of St Paulís Cathedral since 604AD. The current cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Its dome is one of the highest in the world. During the Blitz of World War 2 St Paulís Watch, a special group of firefighters, helped protect the Cathedral from incendiaries and the dome became an iconic image of survival. St Paulís has played host to many famous people and events including the funerals of Lord Nelson, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria, the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer and the 80th birthday and the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth 2.
