Tower Bridge
"<" back one image Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge that crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London. It was designed by Sir Horace Jones after a competition held to design a crossing that still allowed tall ships access to the Pool of London port facilities. The bridge is 800ft long and the two towers are each 213ft high and built on piers. The central span is 200ft and spilt between two bascules that raise to an angle of 86 degrees. They are counterbalanced and allow the bascules to be raised within five minutes. The bridge was opened in 1894 by the then Prince of Wales. The current colour scheme dates from HM the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.
